Nikon Announces the 24-70mm f/2.8 VR, 24mm f/1.8, and 200-500mm f/5.6 VR

Today, Nikon announced three very intriguing lenses. The 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR, the 24mm f/1.8G ED and the 200-500m f/5.6E ED VR. This trio of lenses updates a current lens with VR, another with a cheaper f/1.8 versions and the larger of the three, is meant to compete with offerings by its competitors.

This update to Nikon’s already incredible 24-70mm f/2.8 will be a staple in the bags of professionals and serious ethusiasts around the world just as its predecessor has been for many years. It adds Nikon’s Vibration Reduction (VR) technology allowing for four stops of image stabilization and will be one of the go-to lenses for photojournalists as well as wedding photographers shooting in tough lighting conditions.

This is a seemingly minor upgrade to the D7100, but is still a very nice camera and at a very reasonable price.

Some quick specs:

  • 6 FPS (7 FPS in 1.3x crop mode) burst
  • EXPEED 4 processor for 30% faster processing over D7100
  • 3.2” 1.23 million dot LCD
  • 51 AF points with focusing down to -3EV (15 cross-type)
  • 100-25,600 native ISO range (H1 & H2 but black and white only)
  • 1/8000 of a second shutter speed max
  • WiFi + NFC (Near Field Communication)
  • Built-in time-lapse with .mov creation in-camera
  • Flat and Clarity picture controls
  • 1080p at 30/25/24p (1080 at 60/50p in 1.3x Crop Mode only)
  • Zebra stripes
  • Built-in stereo mic jack with 20 levels of adjustment, headphone jack, HDMI & USB
  • Exposure Smoothing and Auto ISO
  • Dual SD card slots

What it lacks:

  • An articulating touchscreen
  • Focus peaking
  • No 4K video
  • No LiveView Phase Detection
  • Slower frame rate compared to 7D Mark II
  • No USB 3
  • No GPS
